Whitworth a TREEmendously Great Place to Live!
A massive thanks to all of you who turned out on Wednesday 13 November, a misty and cold but thankfully dry morning, to plant 420 native trees at Waingap Woods. This was a WTC Environment and Wildlife Committee project supported by Ian Wright and Will Swift from LCC Treescape. 9 local volunteers turned up to help, which was amazing given the short notice.
Particular thanks go to our lengthsman, Chris Rothwell, who not only planted trees with us but also transported the trees, tree guards, canes and 2 volunteers from The Ashcroft; thanks also to Cllr Janet Whitehead for helping to find some volunteers on Facebook.
Thanks also to Lee Burgess with Alfie, his Alsatian, who took this great group photo for us. The treeplanting stars from left to right are:
Will, Ian A, Wendy, Sue, Ian W, Mat, Chris, Eric, Terry, Ken, Cllr Mike Royds (the committee's Vice Chair), and Steve. We all worked hard but had lots of fun in the process!
Look out for more tree planting opportunities in future. The Environment and Wildlife Committee, in conjunction with LCC Treescape, are hoping to hold a family fun day event planting a Miyawaki forest, with native tree species, if funding is approved.
With projects like these, Whitworth is enabling healthier environments where our community and wildlife can thrive happily together.
