Alan Neal becomes an Honorary Townsman of Whitworth

Published on 6th December 2024

At a meeting of Whitworth Town Council on 19 September 2024, the Town Council voted to bestow the title of Honorary Townsman of Whitworth on Councillor Alan Neal. The nomination was made by Councillor Tom Aldred, who explained “Alan has given excellent service to Whitworth over his 37 years as a Whitworth Town Councillor.  This is a prestigious accolade and the highest award the Town Council are able to give.”  Councillor Aldred added that he cannot think of anyone that is more deserving.

The first Honorary Townsman of Whitworth was Herr Oskar Böhm from Kandel, Whitworth’s twin German town, who received the award in 1980; the most recent recipient was Mrs Anita Farrow, who was honored in 2019 and was the first female recipient of the award. The recipients have all been nominated for the award for their services to the Whitworth community, and a Roll of Honour can be found on display in the Council Chambers in the Whitworth Town Council offices at Whitworth Civic Hall (The Ashcroft).

Councillor Neal and his family planned a celebratory event, held at The Ashcroft on Friday 22nd November, attended by the Mayors of Rossendale and Whitworth, with invited guests.  Despite the inclement weather, residents came out in force to show their appreciation for Councillor Neal’s dedication to Whitworth and enjoyed tea and cake, whilst being entertained by fantastic local vocalist Leah Fisher.
